Pharma 4.0: Fraunhofer IESE develops software platform for virtual pharmaceutical production

by | Apr 28, 2026 | Health, Research

The Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering IESE has developed the modular software platform VIMOPROP. It is intended to support pharmaceutical manufacturers in the virtual planning, simulation and commissioning of production processes and to facilitate the implementation of Pharma 4.0.

VIMOPROP combines digital twins, modular production concepts and integrated quality assurance in an end-to-end digital approach. Production plants can be virtually assembled from prefabricated, reusable modules with plug-and-produce capabilities. Realistic simulations enable comprehensive tests, scenario comparisons and well-founded decisions for process adjustments, product changes or scaling – with significantly less effort for physical trials.

Especially for the production of Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs), the platform offers a flexible and regulatory-safe solution. Quality assurance is already integrated in the virtual planning phase, among other things through quality-by-design approaches and the automatic generation of virtual certification reports.

The practicality was demonstrated using an application for sterile media preparation. The project was funded by the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Science and Health with 400,000 euros.

VIMOPROP thus creates a digital foundation for agile, scalable and regulatory-compliant pharmaceutical production.
