Gender-sensitive medicine: Leopoldina lecture on heart attack risks in women

by | Jun 4, 2026 | Health, Research

Women die from their first heart attack much more often than men because the symptoms often progress differently and are less often recognized as a heart attack. Gender medicine specialist Prof. Dr. Ute Seeland draws attention to this. On Wednesday, June 17, 2026, she will give a lecture at the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in Halle on the topic of “Gender-sensitive medicine – why, why, why?”.

Seeland is a specialist in internal medicine at the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg and has been head of the first university outpatient clinic for gender-sensitive medicine in Germany since 2024. In her lecture, she will explain how biological factors such as gender, hormone status and physiology must be taken into account together with socio-cultural influences in order to enable better diagnostics and therapy. Especially in research and clinical trials, women have often been insufficiently taken into account so far.

Before the lecture at 6:30 p.m., Leopoldina President Prof. Dr. Bettina Rockenbach will present the membership certificates to new members of Class III – Medicine at 5:30 p.m. The event in the main building of the Leopoldina (Jägerberg 1) is aimed at all interested parties and is free of charge. Registration is required by Monday, June 15.

Gender-sensitive medicine pursues a systems biology approach and is intended to help ensure that diseases are detected and treated equally in both sexes. The Leopoldina Lecture is recognized by the Medical Association of Saxony-Anhalt as a continuing education event.

On the following day, 18 June, a Class III symposium entitled “Latest Findings from Medicine” will also take place, at which other current medical topics will be discussed. This symposium is also recognized as advanced training.
