DSMZ: More microbiomes for global research
The Leibniz Institute DSMZ – German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures GmbH in Braunschweig has expanded its portfolio to include representative, defined microbial communities. From now on, standardized packages from the microbiomes of mice, maize and a sweet grass are available to researchers worldwide.
Previously, only individual bacterial strains could be ordered. The new joint packages now enable comparable and reproducible studies on interactions between microbiota and host. In addition, the DSMZ continues to offer a large selection of individual strains from other microbiomes – including human intestines, pigs, chickens and the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana (thale cress).

Microbiome research has become increasingly important in recent years, as the interaction of microorganisms with humans, animals and plants has a decisive influence on health, growth and disease progression. With the newly defined communities, the DSMZ wants to improve the comparability of experiments worldwide.
