Action plan on drug therapy safety launched
The kick-off meeting of the AMTS Coordination Group marked the beginning of the implementation of the new Action Plan for the Improvement of Drug Therapy Safety (AMTS) in Germany. The Federal Cabinet adopted the plan on April 1, 2026.
The action plan places a special focus on the digitalisation of the healthcare system and the associated opportunities for greater safety in the medication process. The focus is on the question of how digital applications such as the e-prescription or the electronic patient record with medication plan can improve workflows in the medication process.

The coordination group analyses the optimisation possibilities resulting from this for better drug therapy safety. Prof. Dr. Petra Thürmann, Chair of the Coordination Group, explained that digitization opens up the opportunity to better network information, to identify risks earlier and to strengthen drug therapy safety in cooperation with all professional groups involved.
Federal Minister of Health Nina Warken emphasized that innovative drugs offer better and better treatment options, but that taking several drugs at the same time carries the risk of avoidable side effects and interactions. An estimated 250,000 hospital admissions per year resulted from medication errors. The action plan is intended to remedy the situation through a better overview and greater use of digital possibilities.
Another focus is on the systematic use of health data to continuously monitor changes in the AMTS. Particularly vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women, women and the very elderly are to be given greater focus.
Dr. Nina Griese-Mammen, co-chair of the coordination group, emphasized that the action plan creates an important structure for interprofessional cooperation. The group is supported by the scientific secretariat of the Drug Commission of the German Medical Association and brings together representatives from the ministry, the medical profession, pharmacists, nursing, hospitals, patient organizations, professional societies and health insurance companies.
The AMTS Action Plan 2026–2029 is intended to promote a more structured and safer medication process and thus contribute to patient safety.
