Bernhard Schieffer appointed to the Steering Committee of the National Decade against Post-Infectious Diseases
Prof. Dr. Bernhard Schieffer, Director of the Clinic for Cardiology, Angiology and Intensive Care Medicine at the Philipps University of Marburg and the University Hospital Marburg (UKGM), has been appointed to the central steering committee of the “National Decade against Post-Infectious Diseases”. The program, initiated by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), is intended to research the causes and therapies of Long COVID, ME/CFS and other post-infectious diseases over a period of ten years.
The steering committee plays a central role in shaping the long-term research strategy. It defines fields of action, initiates concrete measures and continuously adapts the orientation of the Decade to current scientific and health policy developments. In its first meeting at the beginning of 2026, three thematic working groups were already set up in the areas of translation, data and cohorts, and care-related research.
The President of the University of Marburg, Prof. Dr. Thomas Nauss, welcomed the appointment: It underlines the excellent clinical and scientific expertise at the Marburg location and will further strengthen the university’s visibility in national health research.

Post-infectious diseases pose major challenges for modern medicine, as they have so far been insufficiently treatable in the chronic stage. The National Decade aims to elucidate the causes and mechanisms of these diseases and to gradually develop new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Representatives from politics, research, healthcare, business and society work closely together in the initiative.
With the appointment of Prof. Schieffer, expertise from top-level university research and clinical care will be specifically integrated into the strategic management. The aim remains to quickly transfer findings from basic research into patient care and to sustainably improve the treatment of post-infectious diseases.
