Technical University of Munich opens new Center for Infection Prevention

The Technical University of Munich (TUM) has opened the new Center for Infection Prevention (ZIP). The interdisciplinary research center is intended to better control resistant pathogens even without antibiotics and minimize their spread. The federal government and the Free State of Bavaria are funding the ZIP with almost 60 million euros.

The centre combines expertise from microbiology, immunology, bioinformatics, proteomics and biotechnology. It combines basic research with translational approaches and focuses on the One Health concept, which considers the health of humans, animals and the environment together. One focus is on the development of new prevention strategies against multi-resistant germs.

The planned research approaches include the use of phages – viruses that specifically infect bacteria – as well as the development of personalized strategies in which the individual risk of infections with resistant pathogens is determined before therapy.

The new Collaborative Research Centre is intended to make a long-term contribution to curbing the growing threat of antibiotic resistance. Experts assume that by 2050, up to ten million people worldwide could die annually from infections in which conventional antibiotics fail.

The opening of the ZIP strengthens Bavaria as a life science location and underlines TUM’s strategy of linking excellent research in medicine, life sciences and artificial intelligence more closely. The center will be located on an area of around 2,700 square meters.
