MHH receives Lower Saxony Health Award 2025 for digitization project
An interdisciplinary team from the Hannover Medical School (MHH) has been awarded the Lower Saxony Health Prize 2025. The project “Time is Brain & Team is Brain – Digitization in the Process of Acute Stroke Care” convinced in the category “Digital Health”. The award was presented by the Ministries of Social Affairs and Economy, the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians of Lower Saxony, the AOK Lower Saxony and the Chamber of Pharmacists of Lower Saxony.

The project optimises acute stroke care through a smartphone app that is linked to the hospital information system. This enables simultaneous notification of all teams involved, which shortens treatment times and simplifies communication processes. In addition, simulation training improves teamwork. A study shows that the time from admission to lysis therapy fell from 27 to 19.5 minutes.
The team from neurology, medical informatics, emergency room and IT at the MHH and the Peter L. Reichertz Institute prevailed against other applicants. The close cooperation between medicine and computer science, supported by doctoral and master’s students, was decisive for the success. Every year, the MHH treats over 1,000 stroke patients, from whom the optimized infrastructure benefits.
The prize, now in its 15th year, recognises innovative approaches to improving healthcare and aims to encourage others to follow suit.
