Electronic health professional cards (eHPC) must be replaced by 30 June 2026

by | Nov 28, 2025 | Digitization, Politics

By 30 June 2026 at the latest, numerous electronic health professional cards (eHPC) must be replaced, even if their official expiry date is later. The German Medical Association draws attention to this.

The replacement is necessary for two reasons:

Firstly, from 1 July 2026, Generation 2.0 eHPCs may no longer be used for safety reasons. These only use the RSA 2048-bit encryption algorithm, which is considered obsolete. The successor generation 2.1 also relies on ECC (Elliptic Curve Cryptography), which complies with current standards and makes the telematics infrastructure future-proof. Affected are ID cards from D-Trust/Bundesdruckerei and DGN/medisign.

Secondly, eHPCs with chips in which a theoretical vulnerability has been discovered are affected. D-Trust/Bundesdruckerei and SHC+Care are also affected here.

The mass exchange represents a major challenge for card providers and medical associations. Providers will inform the doctors concerned in several waves and provide detailed instructions on their websites. Without timely replacement, the eHPCs will be blocked from the cut-off date, which means that services such as e-prescriptions or electronic certificates of incapacity for work can only be used via replacement procedures. Early reaction to contacting the provider is therefore essential to avoid failures.
