World’s first shunt operation with microsurgical robotic system at the UKSH

At the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH), Kiel Campus, a shunt operation was performed for the first time in the world with the microsurgical “Symani Surgical System”. Two patients had a dialysis shunt, a connection between the artery and the vein for dialysis. The system, previously used in plastic and oral and maxillofacial surgery, thus celebrated its entry into vascular surgery.

The robot system enables precise and gentle interventions through the finest seams, 3D visualization with up to 30x magnification and compensation of hand tremors. This reduces the risk of complications, improves the durability of the shunt and facilitates dialysis, especially in complex anatomical conditions. Since March 2023, the procedure has been prepared in a “bench to bedside” process, including laboratory tests and special surgeon training.

The Clinic for Vascular Surgery plans to use the procedure for procedures on the lower extremities as well and to scientifically evaluate the results. The project was supported by the Clinic for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the Kurt Semm Center, which promotes minimally invasive and robot-assisted surgery at the UKSH. The aim is a safe, patient-oriented integration of modern technologies into clinical practice.
