DGG warns against age discrimination in medicine

by | Nov 18, 2025 | Health, Research

The German Society for Geriatrics (DGG) criticizes considerations of withholding certain therapies from very old people because of their age or costs. The occasion is a debate triggered by statements by the Federal Government’s Drug Commissioner, Hendrik Streeck. Calendar age alone should not be a basis for medical decisions, emphasizes DGG President Prof. Michael Denkinger.

Geriatrics is central to the care of an aging society. In addition to diseases, it also takes into account the functionality, independence and quality of life of older patients. Through the geriatric assessment, it enables a differentiated weighing of treatment options. This scientifically based, interprofessional method relies on cooperation with nursing, therapy and social services as well as dialogue with patients.

Economic aspects are relevant, but must not promote age discrimination. The DGG calls for an objective discussion about the medical care of older people and a strengthening of geriatric structures. With adapted concepts, geriatrics can design a more humane, effective and economically viable medicine in old age. The DGG is pushing for political involvement in order to secure trust in the health care system and prevent blanket age limits.
