MHH and Bundeswehr Hospital Westerstede intensify cooperation for crisis preparation

by | Nov 14, 2025 | Health, Politics, Research

The Hannover Medical School and the Bundeswehr Hospital Westerstede have signed a cooperation agreement to prepare care, training and research for crises and security challenges. The aim is to create more resilient health structures for alliance and defence cases through synergies in teaching, further education and research, especially in the treatment of severely injured patients. The partnership will be integrated into the MHH’s application as a University of Excellence.

The MHH is considered a leading university hospital specialising in complex injuries in burn and transplant medicine as well as infection research. As a supramaximal care provider and pure medical university, it positions itself as a health hub in networks. Tandem programs for scientists from the Bundeswehr and MHH are planned, as well as a possible Institute for Military Medicine in Hanover, which will work on topics such as mental health, infection medicine, prosthetics and digital resource management.

The cooperation prepares for disasters, pandemics and military conflicts and strengthens national health care. In patient care, joint concepts for traumatology, burn and amputation medicine as well as anesthesia are being developed. New training courses on crisis medicine, resilience and civil-military cooperation are planned.

The Bundeswehr Hospital Westerstede has been cooperating with the Ammerland Clinic on a civil-military basis since 2008 and serves as an academic teaching hospital of the MHH. The expansion deepens existing connections in patient care, education and research.
