Thieme and Klett Sprachen launch digital learning programme for the licence to practise the practice of foreign doctors
The digital healthcare provider Thieme and the language specialist Ernst Klett Sprachen have developed a joint digital learning offer that is intended to prepare foreign doctors specifically for the medical knowledge test and the technical language examination for the license to practice medicine in Germany. The program is integrated into Thieme’s medical knowledge platform eRef and is aimed primarily at hospitals that want to integrate foreign specialists faster and better.
The shortage of doctors in Germany is exacerbated by the imminent retirement of the baby boomer generation. Well-trained doctors from abroad can be an important relief, provided they receive their license to practice medicine. The prerequisite is proof of equivalent medical knowledge – either through recognition of the foreign degree or by taking the knowledge test – as well as proof of very good German language skills, including medical terminology.

The new offer includes a structured 40-day learning plan with digital learning units, selected subject content and a clear orientation on exam-relevant knowledge. Content from Ernst Klett Sprachen is available for language preparation, supplemented by medical terminology from Thieme. Hospitals can purchase the “eRef Knowledge Test” license package for their foreign doctors, thus facilitating the integration process. Individual licenses are also available directly from the Thieme Shop.
Tillmann Weik, Senior Director Product Management at Thieme, emphasized that the offer is intended to make it noticeably easier for foreign doctors to obtain their license to practice medicine and to give hospitals an advantage in the competition for skilled workers. Matthias Rupp and Hendrik Funke, Managing Directors at Ernst Klett Sprachen, emphasized the social benefits and explained that the program contributes to solving the problem of skilled workers in the health care system.
