The German mammography screening program has significantly reduced breast cancer-related mortality nationwide. This is the result of the “Evaluation of breast cancer mortality in the German mammography screening program” presented in Berlin. The study shows that regular participation reduces breast cancer mortality by 20 to 30 percent compared to women who do not participate in screening. The German Society of Senology expressly welcomes the results and points to the confirmed life-saving benefits of structured screening programs.

“This data is an important success for everyone involved – for the women who trust the program, for the healthcare professionals who ensure the highest quality every day and for the health and radiation protection authorities who responsibly accompany the program,” emphasizes Prof. Dr. Andreas Schneeweiss, President of the German Society of Senology.

Despite the high quality and international pioneering role of the program, it is only used by just under half of the approximately 14 million eligible women between the ages of 50 and 75. The authors of the study used two methodologically independent approaches: one based on health insurance data, the other using data from the North Rhine-Westphalia state cancer registry. Both consistently showed a significant reduction in mortality. Professional societies and health policy-makers are now calling for an increase in the participation rate in order to better exploit the existing potential.
