Rui Benedito is driving forward the genetics of the future at the Max Planck Institute
On June 1, 2025, Dr. Rui Benedito took over as Head of the Department of Functional Genetics at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Biomedicine in Münster. The internationally renowned researcher, who comes from the Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares in Madrid, will develop innovative genetic tools to decipher the effects of mutations on individual cells. “We can now precisely analyze how mutated cells behave in a living organism,” explains Benedito. His focus is on cardiovascular biology and diseases such as cancer, with the aim of improving therapies.

Benedito, who will be fully on site from September 2025, succeeds Dietmar Vestweber and completes the strategic realignment of the institute. “I am delighted to be returning to Münster. The excellent infrastructure and the collaboration with groups like those of Sara Wickström and Ralf Adams offer ideal conditions,” he says. His research uses genetic “barcodes” and imaging to investigate complex disease processes at cell level, in particular vascular growth after heart attacks and drug effects.
“With Rui Benedito, our institute is gaining a pioneer whose tools open up new perspectives for biomedical research,” emphasizes Sara Wickström, Managing Director. His interdisciplinary approaches strengthen Münster as a center for functional genetics and promise progress in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases and cancer.
