Public hearing on ethical challenges in long-term care

by | Jan 16, 2026 | Health, Politics

The German Ethics Council will hold a public hearing on ethical issues in long-term home and inpatient care on 22 January 2026. In view of the increasing need for care, a shortage of skilled workers and changed family structures, the aim is to discuss how care oriented towards dignity, self-determination and well-being can be organised.

Experts from nursing, relatives’ representatives, economics and facility management will exchange ideas. Brigitte Bührlen (Chairwoman of WIR! Foundation of Family Caregivers), Georg Cremer (Professor of Economics, University of Freiburg), Vera Lux (President of the German Professional Association for Nursing Professions), Manfred Schmidt (Chairman of the Home Advisory Board of the Eben-Ezer Home Advisory Board), Bernd Trost (Regional Manager Franziska Schervier Altenhilfe) and Christine Vogler (President of the German Nursing Council).

The results are incorporated into the current statement of the Ethics Council. The hearing from 1 to 5 p.m. will be streamed live on www.ethikrat.org/live; registration is not required. The programme and further information are available on the website of the Ethics Council.
