Pharmacy death in Germany continues

by | Jan 14, 2026 | Health, Politics

The death of pharmacies in Germany continues. At the end of 2025, there were only 16,601 pharmacies nationwide, 440 fewer than in the previous year. The 502 closures were offset by only 62 new openings. This is the lowest level in almost 50 years, comparable to 1977, when there were 16,374 pharmacies. This is shown by figures from the ABDA – Federal Association of German Pharmacists’ Associations based on reports from the state chambers of pharmacists

Since the changeover to the fixed packaging fee 22 years ago, there has only been an increase of 3.1 percent in 2013. Since then, almost 20 percent of pharmacies have had to close, from 20,662 to the current level. The falling number leads to longer distances for patients, which puts a strain on older or immobile people, especially in extreme weather. Courier services can only partially replace personal pharmacy visits.

According to ABDA, the development weakens the resilience of the pharmaceutical supply. Since 2013, costs in pharmacies have risen by 65 percent, making it impossible for many to operate economically. The coalition agreement provides for an increase in the fee to 9.50 euros, but the federal government is omitting this in the ongoing pharmacy reform.
