Pharmacies in North Rhine-Westphalia call for vaccinations against flu, Covid-19, RSV and pneumococcus

by | Nov 27, 2025 | Health, Research

As temperatures drop in autumn and winter, respiratory infections caused by viruses such as flu, corona, RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) and bacteria such as pneumococci increase. Older people, the chronically ill and nursing home residents are particularly at risk – for them, infections can take a serious or even life-threatening course. Pharmacists in the administrative districts of Cologne and Düsseldorf are therefore appealing to take advantage of the recommended vaccinations promptly.

Flu: More aggressive strains circulating

The current flu wave in Europe is considered particularly aggressive. Symptoms such as high fever, aching limbs and extreme fatigue can lead to complications such as pneumonia in risk groups – the elderly, those with pre-existing conditions or nursing home residents. Annual vaccination between October and mid-December is recommended, even for people with regular contact with farm animals, to avoid double infections.

Covid-19: Long-term risks exist

Although the pandemic is officially over, Covid-19 remains a danger, especially for the over-60s, the chronically ill and medical staff. Symptoms such as shortness of breath or Long Covid continue to occur. An annual booster vaccination is recommended; healthy adults should build up basic immunity through at least one vaccination and two infections.

RSV: Underestimated risk in old age

RSV can cause flu-like symptoms in seniors or immunocompromised individuals that turn into severe pneumonia. Vaccinations are recommended from the age of 75 or from the age of 60 for serious underlying diseases, ideally in September/October.

Pneumococcus: Protection for young and old

These bacteria endanger young children, seniors over 60 and chronically ill people in particular through pneumonia, which can lead to blood poisoning or meningitis. Basic vaccination in childhood and boosters in adults ensure protection.

Pharmacies as vaccination centres

In North Rhine, pharmacies play a key role alongside medical practices. They offer flu and Covid-19 vaccinations on site, often with advice and combined appointments. A postcode search on www.apoguide.de helps to find participating pharmacies.
