Otto von Guericke University: New Approaches to the Diagnosis and Treatment of Pulse-Synchronous Tinnitus

Medical engineers at the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg have simulated the mechanism of pulse-synchronous tinnitus in patient-specific computer models for the first time. The study, conducted at the STIMULATE research campus under the direction of Janneck Stahl, shows how a narrowing of the cerebral vein, known as sinus stenosis, causes the characteristic rhythmic noise in time with the heartbeat. The results were awarded the “Best European Publication 2025” award at the ESMINT Congress 2025 in Marseille.

The researchers analyzed image data from patients, provided by the University of Illinois at Chicago, and created detailed computer models of blood flow in the head. These models made it clear that the narrowing of the cerebral vein increases the flow velocity and the pressure drop on the vessel wall, which creates vortices and causes the disturbing noise. Virtual simulations showed that a stent widens the constriction, calms blood flow and reduces noise. Rotational angiography proved to be a reliable method for diagnosing the crucial pressure drop.

The findings provide a basis for a minimally invasive treatment of pulse-synchronous tinnitus, which is particularly stressful for those affected. In cooperation with the University Clinic for Neuroradiology Magdeburg, a special consultation was set up to establish non-invasive image diagnostics that enable precise therapy decisions. The study opens up new perspectives for a gentler diagnosis and treatment of this agonizing disease.
