The University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG) has comprehensively modernized its Interdisciplinary UMG Laboratory. The new high-tech equipment and fully automated processes enable faster, more precise and round-the-clock analyses that significantly improve patient care in southern Lower Saxony. The modernization, which was completed in six months during ongoing operations, strengthens diagnostics in the fields of haematology, haemostaseology, clinical chemistry and virus serology.

State-of-the-art technology for faster diagnoses

The Interdisciplinary UMG Laboratory, which covers an area of 350 square meters, has been fully equipped with new devices and the laboratory automation has been completely overhauled. Modernization began in 2024 with the laboratory line for haematological samples, for example from cancer patients. The large laboratory line for the other areas has also been in operation since May 2025.

One example of the acceleration is the measurement of the troponin value, a key marker for heart attacks, which now takes just nine minutes instead of the previous 20 minutes.

The UMG carries out almost all diagnostic analyses in its own laboratory without having to send samples to external facilities. Samples such as blood, urine or cerebrospinal fluid are transported directly from the clinics to the laboratory via a 4,500 meter long telelift rail system or the pneumatic tube system. An automated pre-sorter reads barcodes containing the measurement requirements and patient assignment and distributes the samples to the appropriate areas. This minimizes the risk of mix-ups and optimizes the workflow.

A new feature is the ability to split samples for special and routine measurements fully automatically so that both analyses can be carried out in parallel. The system also automatically checks the sample quality before analysis. If the quality is insufficient, a note is added for the treating doctors, which further increases the reliability of the results.

The modernized laboratory strengthens the UMG’s position as a leading center for medical diagnostics in southern Lower Saxony. By processing samples from external institutions, it contributes to regional care.

The inauguration ceremony underlined the importance of the project for the region. The UMG plans to further expand the laboratory’s range of services in order to be able to react flexibly to new diagnostic requirements. With the modernization, the UMG is setting standards in the efficiency and quality of laboratory diagnostics and consolidating its role as a pioneer in university medicine.
