mio42 Update: Progress in Laboratory Findings, Patient Summary Records and European Harmonization
In a recent newsletter, mio42 GmbH has given an update on ongoing projects in the field of medical interoperability. The focus is on the further development of the MIO laboratory findings, the revision of the patient summary file (PKA) and the alignment with European standards in the context of the European Health Data Space (EHDS).
The MIO laboratory report prepares the transition from document-based to service-based structures in the electronic patient record (ePA). Together with gematik and partners from the interoperability community, an approach is being developed that enables structured laboratory data – including cross-system histories, cumulative views and targeted value utilization. The core is uniform coding with LOINC in accordance with EHDS specifications. To support the laboratories, mio42 is developing a practical LOINC mapping start-up aid with around 2,000 everyday examinations as well as a focused core list with around 100 relevant parameters (including a complete blood count, basic diagnostics). At the same time, the company is involved in European HL7 working groups and MyHealth@EU in order to avoid duplication of work and to make EHR content usable across borders in the future. Future expansion stages include specializations such as microbiology and pathology in cooperation with the RKI and the Medical Informatics Initiative.

According to the Mio42 update, the patient summary file (PKA) will be fundamentally revised. The first version from July 2023 was oriented towards emergency data management and was planned as a separate application. Due to DigiG legislation and the new ePA infrastructure (FHIR-based, service-oriented), PCA is now firmly integrated into the ePA. At the same time, the EHDS Regulation (mandatory European Patient Summary from 2029 in Germany) is gaining in importance; Implementing acts are expected in 2027. mio42 analyses the reasons for the low use of PCAs and emergency data in everyday care and coordinates with gematik, user groups and KBV. The focus is on the question of which content is practical, usable and relevant to Europe.
When it comes to diagnoses in the ePA, mio42 emphasizes that pure structuring alone does not create added value. Diagnoses are dynamic and require professional differentiation. As part of the MIO work on PCA and hospital discharge letter, it is examined which diagnostic information is really essential. An MIO check-up on this topic is available.
mio42 supports the gematik campaign #mitmachen, which collects feedback from everyday practice and hospital life in order to further develop telematics infrastructure solutions in a user-oriented manner. Acceptance is created through actual benefit and comprehensibility, not through specifications.
