Troponin

by | Mar 4, 2025

Troponin is a protein that is found in the muscle cells of the heart and is responsible for the contraction of the heart muscle. When the heart muscle tissue is damaged, for example during a heart attack, troponin enters the bloodstream. This makes the troponin test an important tool for detecting heart damage and assessing the severity of a heart attack.

How is the test carried out in Germany?

In Germany, the troponin test is usually carried out using highly sensitive methods (hs-troponin), which can measure even small amounts of the protein in the blood. A blood sample is analyzed in the laboratory and the results help to quickly diagnose heart problems such as unstable angina pectoris or heart attacks. The tests follow the guidelines of the European Heart Foundation (ESC), which are used throughout Europe, including Germany.

Normal values and interpretation

Normal values for troponin are typically below 14 to 27 ng/L, depending on the test kit and laboratory used. Levels above this limit indicate myocardial damage, but the doctor will also consider other factors such as symptoms and other tests to make the diagnosis.
