Sepsis

by | Mar 4, 2025

Sepsis is a serious and life-threatening condition that occurs when the body responds to an infection, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites, with an exaggerated reaction. This reaction can lead to inflammation throughout the body, which damages organs and, in the worst case, can lead to death. Common sites of infection are the lungs, the urinary tract, the intestines and the skin.

Why is early detection important?

Early detection and treatment of sepsis is crucial as the prognosis worsens over time. The sooner treatment begins, the better the chances of recovery. Sepsis is a medical emergency and if suspected, a doctor or the emergency services should be called immediately.

Which laboratory tests are used in Germany?

In Germany, various laboratory tests are used to diagnose sepsis and monitor its progress. These include

  • Blood cultures: To identify the pathogen and choose the right antibiotic therapy.
  • Complete blood count (CBC): Measures the number of white blood cells, which are often elevated in infections.
  • C-reactive protein (CRP): A marker for inflammation that is often elevated in sepsis.
  • Procalcitonin (PCT): A more specific marker for bacterial infections that increases in sepsis.
  • Lactate: A marker of tissue hypoperfusion that indicates the severity of the disease.
  • Organ function parameters: Such as liver values, kidney values and electrolytes to assess the effects on organs.

These tests help to determine the cause, severity and effectiveness of the treatment.
