KI: German Registry for Chronic Rhinosinusitis Launched

by | Jan 6, 2026 | Digitization, Featured

The German Register for Chronic Rhinosinusitis has officially started operations. The joint project of the German Society for Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery and the Medical Association of German Allergologists is intended to systematically record the diagnosis, therapy and course of the disease and improve care in ENT medicine.

Chronic rhinosinusitis is one of the most common diseases of the upper respiratory tract and affects several million people in Germany. Typical symptoms are nasal congestion, facial pain, olfactory disorders and secretions. The disease severely limits the quality of life and can lead to complications such as polyp formation or infections. It is often associated with asthma or allergies. So far, there is a lack of comprehensive data on the long-term course and effectiveness of treatments, ranging from drug approaches such as cortisone nasal sprays or antibiotics to surgical interventions.

The registry closes this gap through prospective data collection over years. It records symptoms, diagnostic methods and treatment strategies. Doctors enter data digitally, which can be exported as reports. Patients participate via an app with diaries and questionnaires. Germany-wide registration will begin in spring 2026, and doctors can already join now.

An interdisciplinary committee is leading the project. Financing is provided exclusively from the funds of the participating companies, which ensures independence. The preparation took over two years and included the development of digital tools.

The registry is considered unique in the world and uses artificial intelligence for data processing. It is intended to promote evidence-based guidelines, optimize therapies and serve as a model for other chronic diseases. The initiative strengthens interdisciplinary collaboration and contributes to personalized medicine.
