International survey launched on patient risks from erroneous laboratory results
A new international survey of laboratory professionals is intended to assess the severity of possible patient harm caused by incorrectly reported laboratory results. The initiative complements a first study from 2025 and aims to expand a harmonized risk management framework in laboratory medicine. It is based on the requirements of the ISO 15189:2022, ISO 22367 and Rili-BÄK standards.
The first survey with 243 participants from 40 countries had evaluated 20 analytes and had been published in 2025 in the journal Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (CCLM) (DOI: 10.1515/cclm-2024-1477). The ongoing second survey now captures 70 additional laboratory parameters to provide a broader scientific basis for risk assessment throughout the testing process.

The survey is anonymous and takes about 15 minutes. Participants can optionally enter their contact details to receive the study results. The survey was initiated by Bio-Rad Laboratories and is conducted in collaboration with an international panel of experts.
The participation of laboratory experts from Germany is particularly important for a balanced international representation. The organizers ask for active participation via the link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HTDPFZZ.
The initiative is intended to contribute to a greater international standardization of risk management in laboratory medicine and to further improve patient safety.
