Institute for Clinical Chemistry at the University Medical Center Mannheim

Description

The Institute of Clinical Chemistry (IKC) at the University Medical Center Mannheim is the third oldest laboratory medicine institute in Germany. It is home to the Chair of Clinical Chemistry at the University of Heidelberg. In addition to round-the-clock provision of laboratory diagnostic services, the IKC offers a wide range of special examinations. These include haematological phenotyping including bone marrow culture, a daily bone marrow conference with the Department of Haematology-Oncology, molecular diagnostics with Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and liquid profiling diagnostics. IKC employees contribute their expertise to the Molecular Tumor Board and the Tumor Center Board of Directors. In addition, the IKC provides the hospital’s blood culture diagnostics with direct mass spectrometric pathogen detection on a 24-hour basis.

In addition to full authorization for further training as a clinical chemist and authorization for further training as a specialist in laboratory medicine, further training in microbiology and immunohaematology is also available. The additional qualification “Clinical Haemostaseology” is supported. Clinical traineeships and internships are offered.

The IKC operates the core facilities for NGS, single-cell analysis, proteomics and bioinformatics for the Faculty of Medicine. The scientific focus is on molecular immunology, molecular diagnostics in oncology and medical informatics topics.
