Institute for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Diagnostics, University Hospital Jena, Medical Faculty Friedrich Schiller University Jena

Description

The Institute of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Diagnostics (IKCL) at Jena University Hospital (UKJ) operates in three shifts, seven days a week, and is responsible for providing laboratory medical care and advice to 29 clinics in all areas of patient care for the UKJ using a comprehensive range of methods. Since July 2017, the institute has also been providing laboratory care for the Sophien-Hufeland-Klinikum with a laboratory at the Weimar site. The focus of patient care is on sepsis, systemic inflammation, autoimmune diagnostics, flow cytometry and mass spectrometry. One focus of research in recent years has been the translation of basic medical findings into the development and validation of new innovative diagnostic procedures, particularly in the areas of sepsis and inflammation. Another focus is the establishment, operation and quality assurance of biobanks in a number of research networks and collaborative research projects.

The IKCL teaches students of human medicine and dentistry all areas of laboratory medicine in corresponding lectures, seminars and practical courses. In addition, laboratory medicine is taught as a main module in the “Molecular Medicine” degree course. A clinical traineeship at the institute is possible. Full authorization for further training as a clinical chemist and, as part of an alliance with the UKJ’s Microbiology and Transfusion Medicine department, as a specialist in laboratory medicine is available.
