As part of patient care, the central laboratory at Essen University Hospital provides a wide range of laboratory medical services, including in the fields of clinical chemistry, haematology, haemostaseology, endocrinology, immunology including autoimmune diagnostics, plasma protein and cerebrospinal fluid protein diagnostics, therapeutic drug monitoring, allergy diagnostics and molecular biological diagnostics. The central laboratory processes around 500,000 laboratory orders per year (as of 2023) for the 27 clinics at the University Hospital and performs around 8 million analyses. The central laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art analytical equipment and, since 2003, with laboratory IT (Swisslab). In the area of research and teaching, the central laboratory offers medical students practical courses and seminars in clinical chemistry and laboratory diagnostics. It provides laboratory analysis as part of clinical studies and large population studies at the UME. Another core task is the special analysis of hormones and metabolic parameters and the establishment of special assays for animal and human studies.

The central laboratory is authorized to provide further training for specialists in laboratory medicine, clinical chemists, internists and specialists in endocrinology and diabetology
