The Institute of Laboratory Medicine, Clinical Chemistry and Pathobiochemistry (ILP) at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin is closely linked to Labor Berlin – Charité Vivantes GmbH. The research focus of the ILP is the elucidation and utilization of pathobiochemical mechanisms for diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic purposes. Research fields include inflammatory processes and biochemical transmission of signals (signal transduction), the importance of carbohydrates, molecular oncology and developments in the field of biomarkers. The Institute of Laboratory Medicine, Clinical Chemistry and Pathobiochemistry is involved in the training of students, particularly in the fields of human medicine and dentistry. Lecturers teach on the standard, reform and model degree courses in human medicine. The institute has full authorization for further training as a specialist in laboratory medicine.

Laboratory diagnostics for hospital care have been provided by Labor Berlin – Charité Vivantes GmbH since 2011. It supplies the three Charité sites – Campus Virchow-Klinikum, Campus Charité Mitte and Campus Benjamin Franklin – as well as the eight Vivantes hospitals and thus the majority of hospital beds in Berlin with routine and special laboratory medical analysis around the clock. The head of the ILP, Prof. Kai Kappert, MD, is also the director of the Laboratory Medicine and Toxicology department at Labor Berlin.
