INQUIRED: “With over 100 years of experience in the market, we are actively shaping the future of digital pathology”

by | Jul 7, 2025 | Health, Research

Pathology is still at the beginning of its digital transformation compared to radiology, but the importance of digital technologies in medical diagnostics is growing rapidly. The transformation presents pathology with unique challenges, particularly in the areas of image processing, big data integration and workflow design. Simply digitizing microscopic images is not enough for clinical applications – sophisticated processes and interoperable systems are needed to meet the increasing demands. Pathology is confronted with structural hurdles: Demographic change is leading to a shortage of specialists, while an ageing population and advances in prevention and precise diagnostics are increasing case numbers and data volumes. Efficient digital solutions are therefore essential to overcome these challenges. The introduction of digital pathology marks a decisive step for both science and clinical practice.

Dr. Tina Manoharan, Vice President Clinical Business at Evident, leads the company’s clinical business units for digital pathology, conventional microscopy and in-vitro fertilization.

Dr. Manoharan, how does digitalization simplify and improve pathology for patients and healthcare professionals?

Today, we have enormous amounts of data and digital possibilities at our disposal, but “simple” has a different meaning for everyone: for patients, it means getting the right diagnosis at the right time; for pathologists, it means finding accurate information quickly; for healthcare systems, it means ensuring quality efficiently and affordably. Digital pathology makes tissue and cell information immediately accessible. AI and digital tools enable even more precise analysis.

What role does artificial intelligence play in pathology?

We want to support clinical decisions efficiently and cost-effectively. AI is a key technology here: on the one hand, it optimizes operational processes by detecting and correcting image errors such as air bubbles or blurring. On the other hand, it strengthens diagnostics: from counting abnormal cells to complex analyses at protein or gene level. As diagnostics are increasingly based on molecular data, AI helps to evaluate this data efficiently and in a standardized way. This gives pathologists deeper insights to make informed decisions. We are proud to be part of this development.

What makes Evident’s devices so helpful in this process?

Evident has more than 100 years of experience in precision optics and microscopy – under the former name Olympus. Our microscopes and scanners provide insights into tissue and cells down to the sub-cellular level. Our strength lies in advanced optics which, among other things, allow tissue samples to be viewed from different perspectives, for example through transmitted light, fluorescence or polarization. The knowledge gained from thousands of microscopes used in clinical diagnostics and research worldwide is now being incorporated into modern scanners, software solutions and analysis tools.

What makes Evident different from others?

With over 100 years of experience in the market, we are actively shaping the future of digital pathology. Our focus is on more precise diagnoses, efficient and cost-saving solutions and an intuitive user experience, as simple as a smartphone. To achieve this, we develop our systems together with pathologists, laboratory teams and strategic partners.

How does Evident support pathologists in the transition to digital pathology?

Direct access to complex data on the screen gives medical teams a comprehensive view of the patient. We support this change with training and flexible implementation. Our scanners provide data-rich images and allow the use of our own AI models, without any data science expertise. This is how digital transformation succeeds.

For me, this is personal: thanks to precise diagnosis and treatment, I have been given new opportunities. Making this quality of care accessible worldwide is what drives me, and my dedicated team shares this passion for better, digital patient care. Together we make a difference!
