From September 17 to 20, 2025, the German Society of Urology (DGU) will gather for its 77th congress at the Congress Center Hamburg under the motto “Urology connects”. The congress president, Prof. Dr. Bernd Wullich, focuses on sustainability, a topic that is to be firmly anchored in research, clinics and practice through a roadmap, a member survey and initial projects. The opening press conference on Wednesday, 17 September, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. in Room D marks the start and highlights central topics such as sustainability, hospital reform, digitalisation, current research and professional policy developments.

The four-day program covers a broad spectrum of urology. The focus is on uro-oncology, digitalization, robotics, complementary procedures and greater patient involvement. Research highlights include digital therapies against incontinence, new study data on PARP inhibitors in hormone-sensitive metastatic prostate cancer, molecular subtyping in bladder carcinoma and studies on penile cancer. Particular attention is paid to the early detection of prostate cancer because, unlike mammography, there is no organized screening in Germany so far. Parallel events such as the Nursing Congress promote interprofessional exchange, while young talent formats such as a school and study day appeal to young talents.

One highlight is the awarding of the Maximilian Nitze Medal to Prof. Dr. Peter Albers, a leading expert in testicular tumors and prostate carcinomas. His work, including over 300 original publications and the management of the PROBASE study, has significantly advanced early detection and care. The Urology Media Prize 2025 goes to Dr. Maria Sprinz, who is the @answeringforafriend to educate people about urological topics on TikTok and Instagram. The award, endowed with 2500 euros, will be presented digitally by Dr. Johannes Wimmer.

In terms of professional policy, the hospital reform and the role of specialists in the planned primary doctor system are being discussed. Digitalisation is seen as an opportunity and challenge that must be actively shaped in order to improve care. Events such as the presidential plenary session “Urology must connect – patient, system, environment”, the forum “Better Environment – Better Health” and the Forum on Complementary Medicine in Uro-Oncology offer space for discussions on sustainable and patient-oriented developments. A graphic recording will accompany the event and invite visitors to contribute their ideas for sustainable urology.

The congress impresses with a high level of registration from all areas of urological care and underlines the role of the DGU as a platform for networking and innovation. With a focus on sustainability, research and interdisciplinary cooperation, the 77th DGU Congress sets standards for the future of urology in Germany.
