DFG funds new Research Training Group on Tumor Organoids in Ulm
From spring 2026, 20 doctoral students in the life sciences and ten physicians will conduct research on realistic models of solid tumors in the new Org-BOOST Research Training Group at Ulm University. The aim is to better predict disease progression and therapeutic effects for personalized cancer medicine.
The German Research Foundation is funding the programme with almost nine million euros over five years. The focus is on patient-derived organoids as mini-tumors, combined with immune, connective tissue and vascular cells to form assembloids to simulate tumor microenvironments.

Ten networked projects deal with tumors of the pancreas, urinary bladder, intestine, breast and blood. The Core Facility Organoids serves as a biobank for samples, complemented by machine learning and automation.
The Research Training Group is integrated into the International Graduate School in Molecular Medicine Ulm and cooperates with the 3R Center and the Comprehensive Cancer Center Ulm to reduce animal experiments.
