BMFTR promotes use cases for in silico methods in medicine
The Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) has published a new funding guideline for model and care-relevant applications of in silico methods in medicine. The announcement was published in the Federal Gazette on 8 June 2026.
The aim is to integrate computer-aided modelling and simulations (in silico methods) more strongly into health research. These approaches are intended to complement classical in vivo and in vitro methods, test hypotheses more quickly and accelerate their transfer into clinical application. The funding is part of the concept “e2Health – In silico research for the medicine of the future” and contributes to the High-Tech Agenda Germany.

Funding is provided for a scouting competition with a feasibility phase of up to ten months and a subsequent implementation phase of up to three years. Interdisciplinary, data-driven research networks are to test innovative in silico applications on concrete medically relevant use cases. Possible topics range from the identification of new drugs and drug repurposing to more precise diagnostics and patient stratification to simulations of disease progression, virtual clinical trials and decision support systems.
The focus is on disease areas with high relevance for cross-sectoral care, such as cancer, women’s health or diseases of the eye and skin. Clinical studies, the generation of new biomedical data sets or the primary development of biomaterial banks are not funded.
Universities, non-university research institutions and companies in the commercial sector with their registered office or branch in Germany are eligible to apply. Sketches are expected to be submitted until 27 August 2026. The funding is provided within the framework of the Federal Government’s Health Research Framework Programme.
