German Council of Science and Humanities calls for stronger integration of preclinical and clinical disciplines in medicine

In a new statement, the German Council of Science and Humanities has analysed the situation of medical disciplines without direct patient contact and presented concrete recommendations for education and training. The Association of Scientific Medical Societies (AWMF) discussed these proposals at its delegates’ conference together with the Chairman of the German Council of Science and Humanities, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Wick, and the President of the Association of Medical Faculties (MFT), Prof. Dr. Martina Kadmon.

Prof. Dr. Rolf-Detlef Treede, President of the AWMF, explained that the preclinical and clinical-theoretical subjects are little present in society’s perception compared to the clinical-practical subjects, although they provide about half of the training in medical studies. A closer integration of both areas is essential for holistic medicine of the future. This includes both the linking of teaching content in the National Competence-Based Learning Objectives Catalogue (NKLM) and the interdisciplinary recognition of further training periods in the Model Continuing Education Regulations.

Prof. Dr. Martina Kadmon emphasized that the NKLM is a central instrument for the competence-oriented further development of medical studies. It enables a better coordination between core curricula, in-depth offers and continuing education content, even if the concrete implementation at the faculties varies from location to location.

Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Wick, Chairman of the German Council of Science and Humanities, emphasized that the further development of all medical subjects – practical and theoretical – is crucial for future-oriented medicine. The recommendations must be seen in the context of further statements by the German Council of Science and Humanities on prevention and personnel structures.

The AWMF has long been committed to interdisciplinary translational research and in-depth education and training. The recommendations of the German Council of Science and Humanities support this goal and are now to be implemented in close coordination with MFT and medical associations.
