4,000 doctors demand sugar tax – “Klingbeil must submit proposal”
Around 4,000 doctors are calling for the rapid introduction of a sugar tax on high-sugar drinks and food. Federal Finance Minister Klingbeil is to present a concrete proposal for this immediately.
The doctors see such a levy as an effective instrument against the growing obesity epidemic and the associated secondary diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and certain types of cancer. A sugar tax could reduce the consumption of products that are harmful to health and at the same time generate revenue for preventive measures in the health care system.

The initiative joins earlier demands by the German Medical Association and other professional societies, which see higher taxes on stimulants that are harmful to health as part of a financing strategy for statutory health insurance for society as a whole. The doctors emphasize that such a tax would not only have a preventive effect, but also relieve the economy in the long term.
So far, the Federal Ministry of Finance has not presented any concrete plans for a sugar tax. The doctors’ demand is likely to further fuel the debate about a healthier food policy and the financing of the health system.
