UV protection already in spring: BG BAU warns against early exposure
As early as March, ultraviolet radiation from the sun (UV radiation) can pose health risks. The German Employers’ Liability Insurance Association for the Construction Industry (BG BAU) therefore advises that sun protection measures for outdoor employees should not start in summer, but in spring.
The UV index is decisive. From a value of 3, protective measures are required. This requirement has been laid down in the Technical Rule for Workplaces ASR A5.1 since August 2025 and serves as a guide for compliance with the Workplace Ordinance.

UV radiation is considered the main cause of non-melanoma skin cancer. Employees in the construction industry and other open-air professions are particularly at risk. Regular instruction and preventive measures are therefore part of occupational health and safety.
BG BAU is now providing companies with new training materials and an extensive workshop on UV protection online. The documents contain practical information, graphics and concrete recommendations for action and can be used directly for instruction.
Effective protection is based on the TOP principle (technical – organizational – personal):
- Technical measures: sun sails, weather protection tents or shade
- Organisational measures: Avoiding work in the blazing sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., relocating activities to the early hours of the morning or into the building
- Personal measures: Long clothing, headgear with neck and ear protection, sunglasses and waterproof sunscreen with SPF 30 or better 50
From 6 April, member companies of BG BAU will be able to order free sun protection packages. These include a stainless steel water bottle, sunscreen (SPF 50), a UV index check card and an information flyer on UV and heat protection.
“Many underestimate UV exposure in spring. Even at moderate temperatures, the radiation can already be high,” said Hans-Jürgen Wellnhofer, acting head of the prevention department of BG BAU. Prevention must be implemented early and consistently.
Further information and materials can be found on the BG BAU topic page under www.bgbau.de/uv-schutz.
BG BAU is the statutory accident insurance for the construction industry and construction-related services and looks after more than three million insured persons.
