Analytik Jena Celebrates 40 Years of Biometra
Together with its subsidiary Biometra, Analytik Jena can look back on four decades of technological innovation in molecular biology. Since its founding in 1985, Biometra has significantly shaped laboratory practice worldwide – from early electrophoresis systems to the introduction of high-performance PCR thermal cyclers and modern platforms for automated and precise workflows.
In the early years, precision and reliability were paramount: the first products enabled efficient separation and analysis of DNA, RNA and proteins and quickly became the standard in many laboratories. In 1989, the introduction of early PCR thermal cyclers to the market ushered in a decisive step forward – DNA amplification became faster, more accurate and more user-friendly. In the 1990s, Biometra established itself as a reliable partner in research and molecular diagnostics.

In the 2000s, the company specifically expanded its portfolio to include solutions for DNA/RNA extraction and quantitative PCR (qPCR). On May 11, 2009, Biometra became part of the Analytik Jena Group. The integration bundled competencies and expanded the range from thermal cyclers to electrophoresis and blotting systems to imaging and hybridization technologies.
One of the outstanding contributions is the TGradient thermal cycler, which played a key role in the decoding of the human genome. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Biometra systems worldwide supported molecular diagnostics at the highest level. Strategic collaborations, for example with Max Planck Institutes in the field of protein purification, promote knowledge transfer and lead to practical innovations.
Since the 2020s, Biometra has increasingly focused on energy efficiency, sustainability and integration into automated laboratory environments to make precise results available even faster and more robustly.
Eggert Appel, Head of Product Development at Biometra, emphasized that the company wants to shape the next 40 years just as boldly and consistently as the past ones. Technological excellence, high user-friendliness and seamless integration into automated processes remained central guidelines. Oliver Klaeffling, Managing Director of Analytik Jena GmbH + Co. KG, thanked all employees, partners and customers for four decades of trust and commitment – this is the basis of success and at the same time an incentive for the future.
Analytik Jena is a leading global provider of analytical measurement and automation technology in the fields of chemical analysis, molecular biology and liquid handling. The company is part of the Endress+Hauser Group, headquartered in Switzerland.
