Laboratory medicine students can also be hackers: “Capture the Egg”

by | Mar 17, 2026 | Digitization

On March 21, 2026, the Wilhelm Büchner University of Applied Sciences invites students and prospective students to a free Capture-the-Flag-Event (CTF) entitled “Capture the Egg” at HUB31 in Darmstadt. The five-hour live hacking event is intended to make practical ethical hacking tangible.

Participants work in teams to solve cybersecurity challenges in the areas of web security, cryptography, reverse engineering, forensics and network security. The goal is to find digital “flags” by analyzing security vulnerabilities and working out creative solutions under time pressure. The teams are put together according to different levels of experience, so that prospective students can compete together with Bachelor’s and Master’s students.

The event will take place from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Fargo room of HUB31 (Hilpertstraße 31, 64295 Darmstadt). It is organized by the university’s Department of Computer Science under the direction of Prof. Dr. Andreas U. Schmidt. In addition to the competition, the focus is on insights into current methods and tools of IT security, which are also relevant in professional practice.

In addition, the event offers networking opportunities with students, teachers and the university team. Pizza and drinks will take care of the physical well-being; at the end there will be an award ceremony for the best teams.

With “Capture the Egg”, the Wilhelm Büchner University of Applied Sciences wants to make practice-oriented IT security education tangible and give potential students an authentic insight into their studies and community.
