by | Mar 11, 2026 | Health, Research

Prof. Rainer Surges, Director of the Clinic and Polyclinic for Epileptology at the University Hospital Bonn, has taken over the office of President of the German Society for Clinical Neurophysiology and Functional Imaging (DGKN).

Under his leadership, the professional society wants to actively shape digital neuromedicine and promote mobile health technologies in research, clinics and patient care. The aim is a more individual diagnosis and therapy of neurological diseases.

The focus of his one-year term of office is the integration of mobile technologies. This includes helping to shape standards, discussing quality and data protection, new training courses on AI and data, and more intensive exchange with payers and authorities.

The DGKN Congress for Clinical Neurosciences 2027, chaired by Surges as Congress President, will be held under the motto “Smart technologies make you mobile”. It is intended to focus on the potential of digital and mobile applications and serves as a platform for interdisciplinary exchange between neurology, neurosurgery, psychiatry, psychology, medical technology, IT and engineering.

Surges emphasizes the need for innovation-friendly framework conditions. Preliminary studies for the validation of mobile technologies should be facilitated, access to medical data should be simplified and approval procedures should be accelerated. The European Medical Device Regulation currently represents high effort and costs even for early feasibility and acceptance studies. In addition, it must be clarified how medical services can be adequately remunerated in the context of digital technologies.

The DGKN promotes innovations in brain research and ensures quality standards through training, further education and certification of neurophysiological and imaging procedures. Surges wants to make society a central player in the responsible digitization of clinical neurophysiology.
