New EU platform provides information on sustainable pharmacy
The EU-funded TransPharm consortium has launched a free, open educational website on the environmental impact of pharmaceuticals and sustainable practices in healthcare. The platform can be reached at www.sustainablepharmaceuticals.eu and is available worldwide without registration, app or fees.
The content is primarily aimed at healthcare professionals, researchers and students. They cover topics such as environmental risk assessment, green and sustainable chemistry and pharmaceuticals, planetary boundaries, life cycle analyses, quality control and the use of machine learning to optimise chemical processes. A central focus is on the concept of “Benign by Design”, which is intended to make drugs and chemicals effective, safe and environmentally friendly from the outset.
The platform was developed in English to enable global use. Especially in the Global South, open educational opportunities should help to build sustainable infrastructures and supply systems from the outset and to avoid environmentally harmful development paths.

The project was didactically responsible for Prof. Avtar Matharu from the University of York. The overall coordination is in the hands of Prof. Chris Stevens from Ghent University, and the hosting is in the hands of the Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Pharmaceutical Engineering and Manufacturing (CESPE) in Ghent. Leuphana University of Lüneburg has been involved in the Horizon Europe project “TransPharm” (Grant Agreement No. 101057816) since 2022. The focus is on the further development of a patented, environmentally friendly antibiotic and the research of new sustainable active ingredients.
The project aims to make the European pharmaceutical industry competitive and at the same time environmentally sustainable. The learning opportunities are supplemented by interactive elements, videos and clear visualizations.
