DRF Luftrettung: Point-of-care diagnostics at the scene of the incident
DRF Luftrettung relies on modern point-of-care diagnostics at the scene, including mobile ultrasound and blood gas analysis devices. A protein blood test for the detection of cerebral haemorrhages is currently being tested at selected stations. These technologies improve therapy initiation and clinic selection.
DRF Luftrettung flew a total of 36,407 missions with helicopters and aircraft in 2025. This corresponds to an increase of 1.6 percent compared to the previous year with 35,850 deployments. The increase in operations in the dark is particularly striking.
The most common reasons for alerting emergency operations were cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks and strokes as well as accidents and falls. The rescue hoist was used 226 times, an increase of 41 percent compared to 2024. The DRF Assistance team carried out 479 patient repatriations worldwide with three ambulance aircraft, an increase of 24 percent. It flew to 45 countries and covered around 1.6 million kilometres.
At 13 stations, the crews were ready for action around the clock, at two others with extended off-peak times. A quarter of all operations took place in the dark. CEO Dr. Krystian Pracz calls for a needs-based expansion of 24-hour air rescue and extended off-peak hours, as emergencies occur regardless of the time of day.

In several tendering procedures, DRF Luftrettung received new or extended orders in 2025 and 2026, including for Christoph Dortmund (24-hour operation), Weiden, Regensburg, Lahr (new from spring 2026), Mannheim and Berlin-Steglitz (all three Berlin stations since 2026).
The organization operates Europe’s most modern fleet of H145 and H135 helicopters, equipped with a digital Helionix cockpit, four-axis autopilot and high-performance technology for day and night operations. In July 2025, the purchase of ten H140 helicopters was agreed.
DRF Luftrettung is active from 33 stations at 31 locations in Germany and is dependent on donations and supporting members.
