On 14.01.2026, Dr. Meina Neumann-Schaal was appointed Adjunct Professor at the Technical University of Braunschweig by the Leibniz Institute DSMZ-German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures GmbH. The biotechnologist has been conducting research at the Leibniz Institute DSMZ in Braunschweig since 2017. Since 2020, she has been head of the cross-sectional department Metabolomics & Services. The research focus of this department covers a wide range of topics – from fundamental metabolic processes to host-pathogen interactions and infection mechanisms to biotechnological applications.

In addition, the cross-sectional department combines research and service in an innovative way. With the help of metabolic and microbiological analyses, it builds a bridge between genome, transcriptome and phenotype data and thus makes an important contribution to the elucidation of gene functions. New scientific findings are quickly incorporated into the service offering, so that customers benefit from sound advice and tailor-made solutions. The analyses are available to researchers at the DSMZ as well as external partners and at the same time contribute to the further development of the DSMZ services.

Meina Neumann-Schaal studied biotechnology at the Technical University of Braunschweig. After completing her doctorate in biochemistry at the University of Potsdam, followed by several years of research, she returned to TU Braunschweig in 20213. Professor Neumann-Schaal’s research focuses on microbial metabolomics. In 2020, she received the venia legendi for the field of biochemistry. She is a co-founder of the German Society for Metabolome Research and held the office of Vice President from 2019 to 2024. In 2023, she was also a founding member of the BRICS Women Network at the Braunschweig Center for Systems Biology (BRICS).
