AWMF warns of cuts at ZB MED and calls for essential services to be secured

by | Dec 2, 2025 | Health, Politics

In a position paper, the Association of Scientific Medical Societies (AWMF) has emphasised the importance of the Central Library of Medicine (ZB MED) and warned of the consequences of financial cuts. ZB MED, which has evolved from a classic specialist library to a digital knowledge infrastructure, is under pressure as the federal government has cut funding and North Rhine-Westphalia has announced funding cuts, which could lead to the discontinuation of some services.

The AWMF emphasizes the relevance of several offers that should be preserved. These include the open access platform German Medical Science (GMS), in particular the successful Journal for Medical Education, which enables low-cost, high-quality and highly visible publications. Other important services include low-threshold access to digital literature even for non-university members, on-site access to collections, the electronic preservation of journals with long-term archiving, and the possibility of research collaborations, which requires third-party funding.

The AWMF sees these services as national tasks that must be ensured under the joint sponsorship of the federal and state governments. The federal government’s withdrawal from funding will undermine the logic of central scientific infrastructures and place a disproportionate burden on North Rhine-Westphalia. Long-term financing is essential to ensure the supply of valid, quality-tested data for research, practice and artificial intelligence.
