Universität Hamburg has defended its top position in the QS Sustainability Ranking among German universities and remains among the top 50 internationally. The competition has grown this year, as more universities are represented nationally and internationally.

In Germany, the university prevailed in a field of 65 universities, compared to 50 in the previous year. More than 1500 universities worldwide are in the ranking, 250 more than before. With 46th place, Universität Hamburg is on a par with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology or universities from Dublin, Exeter and Tokyo.

The result underlines the university’s claim as a University of Excellence to take responsibility for a sustainable future. By linking sustainability and digitalisation, research, teaching and transfer are strengthened.

The performance shows the anchoring of sustainability in the university culture and the commitment to teaching, research and administration. Scientific excellence is associated with responsibility.

In the ranking, the university scores over 90 out of 100 points in almost all indicators. In the field of Environmental Research, the score rises to 96.5 points, partly due to publications by the Cluster of Excellence CLICCS. In Equality, she scores 95.7 points for equality work. In the Health and Wellbeing indicator, the value rises to 98.6 points due to medical research and health services. With 95.2 points, it is one of the best in Germany for Good Governance, especially by the Sustainability Office.

The QS Sustainability Ranking by Quacquarelli Symonds annually evaluates universities in terms of sustainability. It is based on the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals and makes efforts visible.
