DKLM 2025: High relapse stress affects platelets in sepsis patients
Researchers from North Rhine-Westphalia have investigated the influence of high thrust forces on platelets in sepsis patients. The study aims at how intensive measures such as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and ventricular assist systems alter platelet function and surface receptors.
Samples from 35 sepsis patients were analyzed compared to healthy donors. Using light transmission aggregometry, flow cytometry and immature platelet fraction determination, sepsis showed higher immature platelet proportions, greatly reduced platelet activity – enhanced by support systems – and changes in receptors such as a significant decrease in GPVI as well as trends in CD36 and CD42a/b.

The results indicate a negative influence of relapse stress and underline the role of platelets in immunomodulation in sepsis. The researchers are planning further investigations with a larger sample and signaling pathway analyses.
Researchers from the institute in Bad Oeynhausen, in cooperation with universities in Bochum and Bielefeld, were involved. The work will be presented at the DGKL conference in Leipzig.

The German Congress of Laboratory Medicine (DKLM) 2025 promises exciting insights into the interface between science and clinical practice. Under the motto “Science for Precision Medicine”, the German Society for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (DGKL) and the Umbrella Association for Technologists and Analysts in Medicine Germany (DVTA) invite experts from research, clinics and industry to meet on October 23 and 24 at the Congress Center Leipzig (CCL). The two-day event is aimed at laboratory physicians, biomedical analysts and decision-makers to discuss current advances in diagnostics and strengthen networks. The ceremonial opening of the congress will take place on 22 October with the presentation of the MedLabAwards in the Salles de Pologne.
