DKLM 2025: Short-term weight loss offers long-term heart protection

by | Oct 6, 2025 | Health, Research

A groundbreaking study from Leipzig shows that short-term weight loss through lifestyle changes can have long-term positive effects on the cardiovascular system, even if the weight gains again later. Researchers at Leipzig University Hospital investigated changes in the blood plasma of men with metabolic syndrome.

The study involved 58 non-smoking men aged 45 to 55 who had all the characteristics of metabolic syndrome, including obesity, high blood lipid levels and elevated blood pressure. Over a period of six months, they completed a supervised program with nutritional advice and exercise recommendations, which was monitored by telemedicine. Of the 37 participants who were followed up after five years, most had initially lost at least ten percent of their initial weight, but only a few maintained this loss.

The average body mass index dropped from 33 to below 29 during the intervention, but rose again to over 32 after five years. Despite this regression, changes in blood plasma-based proteins associated with cardiovascular disease remained. The analysis with a special panel revealed persistently reduced levels of proteins such as leptin and interleukin-18, which are associated with inflammation, insulin resistance and atherosclerosis.

The results suggest that temporary weight loss may provide lasting metabolic benefits, regardless of long-term weight development.
