DKLM 2025 Preview: OMICs Study Provides Insights into Molecular Mechanisms in Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia
In an OMICs-based study, researchers have identified molecular targets for the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP). The study analysed disease models for HSP types SPG11, SPG15 and SPG48, which are caused by mutations in different genes and lead to impaired cell homeostasis.

Transcriptome analyses of immortalized embryonic mouse fibroblasts (iMEF) and postsymptomatic mouse brain tissue after five-hour starvation showed different gene expression patterns. Comparisons between iMEF and brain tissue indicated variations in affected subcellular pathways. The results indicate specific molecular differences between the HSP types, which promises new approaches for diagnostics and therapy.
Current analyses are intended to support diagnostic and therapeutic interventions for the underlying human disease in the future. Common molecular targets for all three HSP types have not yet been clearly established, but the research offers promising approaches for further investigation.
The details of this study can be seen as a poster at DKLM 2025 in Leipzig. Interested media can receive the poster in advance in compliance with the strict embargo period of 23.10.2025 / 00:01 and presentation of a valid press card. The German Congress of Laboratory Medicine (DKLM) 2025 promises exciting insights into the interface between science and clinical practice. Under the motto “Science for Precision Medicine”, the German Society for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (DGKL) and the Umbrella Association for Technologists and Analysts in Medicine Germany (DVTA) invite experts from research, clinics and industry to meet on October 23 and 24 at the Congress Center Leipzig (CCL). The two-day event is aimed at laboratory physicians, biomedical analysts and decision-makers to discuss current advances in diagnostics and strengthen networks. The ceremonial opening of the congress will take place on 22 October with the presentation of the MedLabAwards in the Salles de Pologne.
