Laying of the foundation stone for the Helmholtz Institute for One Health in Greifswald

by | Sep 12, 2025 | Health, Sustainability

The Helmholtz Institute for One Health (HIOH) in Greifswald has laid the foundation stone for its new research building with a festive ceremony. Numerous representatives from science, politics and partner institutions took part in the event. The new building on Berthold-Beitz-Platz on the campus of the University of Greifswald will in future unite around 120 employees of the institute under one roof. The HIOH was founded in 2021 as a site of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in cooperation with the University of Greifswald, the University Medical Center Greifswald and the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI) Greifswald-Riems. The construction costs of 38 million euros are financed by the federal government and mainly by the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The institute is dedicated to interdisciplinary research into the connections between humans, animals and the environment in the sense of the One Health approach. The focus is on zoonotic infections, antimicrobial resistance and the evolution of pathogens to reduce the risk of new pandemics. The HIOH is currently using premises of the University and University Medical Center Greifswald on a transitional basis. The new building now creates a permanent basis for research at the site.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Prime Minister emphasized the importance of the institute for the region and the research of infectious diseases in a networked world. The Scientific Director of the HZI emphasised the excellent research conditions in Greifswald, which range from local to global issues. The Rector of the University of Greifswald underlined the international visibility of the location in the field of One Health research.

The new building will be built by the Goldbeck company using sustainable construction methods. It comprises 2800 square metres of usable space with modern laboratories up to security level 3, green facades, green roofs with rainwater storage and naturally designed outdoor areas. Completion is scheduled for summer 2027. The building sets an example for innovation and sustainable research in north-eastern Germany.
