Those affected and the Sepsis Foundation call for a National Sepsis Plan before the Bundestag

by | Sep 10, 2025 | Health, Politics

On September 14, those affected will organize an action together with the Sepsis Foundation in front of the Berlin Reichstag building to demand the introduction of a National Sepsis Plan. The occasion is World Sepsis Day, which is celebrated on September 13.

In Germany, around 500,000 people are diagnosed with sepsis every year, and more than 140,000 die from it. This means that the mortality rate is more than twice as high as in countries such as Australia. According to experts, the main causes are a lack of quality assurance measures in hospitals, low training rates of medical staff, insufficient education of the population and low vaccination rates against common triggers such as pneumonia or flu. The result is not only avoidable deaths and long-term damage to survivors, but also enormous treatment costs of 32.7 billion euros annually.

In an international comparison, Germany is well behind countries such as Australia, Norway or Switzerland, with more than 250 sepsis deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. While mortality has fallen there in recent decades, a downward trend is hardly recorded in Germany. According to experts, this not only endangers patients, but also the financial viability of the healthcare system in the long term.

The action in front of the Bundestag includes an art installation on the number of avoidable deaths, a cultural program and a panel discussion with those affected, politics and medicine. In addition, a video message from WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus will be presented. The aim of the initiators is to build up political pressure for a national sepsis strategy, as it already exists in other European countries.
