German Medical Association calls for urgent help for Gaza
The German Medical Association (BÄK) is sounding the alarm in view of the worsening humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, where the medical infrastructure is on the verge of collapse. Hospitals are damaged, overcrowded or out of service, while there is a lack of clean water, food, medicines and medical equipment. These deficiencies lead to catastrophic consequences for the supply of the civilian population, which is suffering from the effects of the ongoing conflict.
The BÄK emphasizes that the protection of medical facilities, staff and patients is an obligation under international law of all parties to the conflict. Attacks on health facilities, aid centres or civilian accommodation as well as their military use are inadmissible. The Chamber calls on the international community, including the United Nations, the European Union and regional actors, to ensure immediate and unhindered access to humanitarian assistance. The delivery and distribution of essential goods such as medicines, bandages, food and water must be guaranteed without delay.

Another central concern of the BÄK is the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages in the Gaza Strip, as their detention is a serious violation of international humanitarian law. The BÄK supports the position of the World Medical Association, which calls on all parties to the conflict to comply with international humanitarian standards. It also welcomes the call by the President of the Israeli Medical Association for an investigation into possible violations of medical ethics and international law by military action.
The German Medical Association appeals to political decision-makers in Germany, Europe and worldwide to fulfil their responsibility and resolutely advance the protection of the civilian population and medical facilities. The dramatic situation requires urgent measures to alleviate the suffering of the people in the Gaza Strip and avert a humanitarian catastrophe.
