ABDA welcomes stricter rules for online prescription of medicinal cannabis

by | Jul 15, 2025 | Digitization, Health, Politics

The ABDA – Federal Union of German Associations of Pharmacists – expresses its clear approval of the amendments to the Medical Cannabis Act proposed by the Federal Ministry of Health. The new draft bill aims to regulate the online prescription of medicinal cannabis more strictly and thus increase safety for patients.

The pharmacists emphasize that medicinal products are not ordinary consumer goods and do not belong on purely profit-oriented trading platforms. Back in June, the German Federal Chamber of Pharmacists drew attention to existing shortcomings in a resolution and called for improved consumer protection. Expert opinions support this stance and criticize the direct forwarding of prescriptions by online platforms to mail-order pharmacies as questionable, as the prescription process is reduced to a mere order.

The ABDA particularly warns against the practice of issuing prescriptions solely on the basis of a completed online questionnaire and emphasizes the need for personal, expert advice in the local pharmacy – not least because of the existing risks of addiction and the effect on brain development in young people. At the same time, the association emphasizes that pharmacists are generally open to digital care solutions and are already actively involved in innovations such as e-prescriptions and electronic patient records. It remains crucial that pharmaceutical quality, personal advice and patient protection always remain the top priority.
